We'll guide you through every step

Moving into residential care is an important step. Our admissions team is here to support you along the way – from your first question through to moving-in day.

      How do I get started?

The first step is simple: get in touch with My Aged Care on 1800 200 422, or register online at www.myagedcare.gov.au. From there, someone from your local Aged Care Assessment Team will reach out to arrange a time to meet and get a proper understanding of what kind of support would suit you best.

Is there availability in my chosen area?

With homes across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria, chances are we’re closer than you think. Give our friendly Admissions team a call on 03 8573 4812, or email admissions@mecwacare.org.au, and we’ll talk through what’s available near you.

How do I book a tour?

We’d love to show you around. Call our Admissions team on 03 8573 4812 or email admissions@mecwacare.org.au to arrange a time that suits. You’ll be shown around by the home’s Facility Manager, who’s always happy to answer any questions along the way.

      How do I apply?

Once you’re ready to apply for a place at a mecwacare home, our Admissions team will help you pull together everything you need, including:

      • My Aged Care service referral code for permanent care [i.e. 1-xxxxxxxxxx]
      • Application for residential care (provided by the Admissions team)
      • Privacy information consent statement (provided by the Admissions team)
      • Enduring power of attorney/guardianship order
      • Fees letter from Services Australia or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, if available.
      What fees will I pay?

There are three cost components that may apply to permanent care, and it’s worth understanding all three. Fees are set and reviewed by the Australian Government — for exact current figures, check www.myagedcare.gov.au or the Department of Health’s current schedule of fees and charges.

      1. Basic daily fee — This one applies to everyone. It covers everyday living costs, the kind of things you’d budget for at home anyway: meals, utilities, cleaning and laundry.

      2. Means tested care fee — This depends on your income and assets, as assessed by the Australian Government, with daily, annual and lifetime caps so it never becomes unlimited. We typically won’t charge this while you’re waiting on your letter from Services Australia or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs — if you’d rather start paying from day one, we can give you an estimate, and we’ll adjust and backdate everything once your letter arrives.

      3. Accommodation payment — How this works depends on your accommodation type:

      • Self-funded: pay as a lump sum (Refundable Accommodation Deposit), a daily payment (Daily Accommodation Payment), or a mix of both. The DAP applies from day one until any RAD is paid in full, at an interest rate the Australian Government sets and fixes from your entry date.
      • Partially supported: pay a contribution instead — as a lump sum (RAC), a daily amount (DAC), or a mix. The amount isn’t fixed and can vary, at an interest rate the government sets and fixes from your entry date.
      • Fully supported: the Australian Government covers your accommodation costs

Find answers to frequently asked questions

How do I know which type of care is right for my family member?

Every family’s situation is different, and it’s okay not to know where to start. Talk to our team – we’ll help you figure out what fits your loved one’s needs.

What does the aged care assessment process involve?

Contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to arrange an assessment. A member of the Aged Care Assessment Team will meet with you to understand your needs and confirm what support you’re eligible for.

How can I arrange a visit to a mecwacare home before making a decision?

We’d love to show you around. Book a tour online using our contact form or call our admissions team on 03 8573 4812 to arrange a time that works for you.

What funding and support options are available to us?

The Australian Government subsidises aged care for eligible people, though depending on your income and assets, you may be asked to contribute towards the cost of your care.

Exactly what applies to you comes down to two things: the type of care you need, and your own financial circumstances. No two situations look quite the same.

That’s where our team comes in — we’ll help you make sense of the costs, walk you through the payment options, and guide you through the funding process, so you always know what to expect before you need to decide anything.
