Community Services

mecwacare provides numerous programs and services from our community centres in Malvern East, Pakenham and Cowes (Phillip Island). We offer clients the opportunity to participate in tailored programs that focus on the health and wellbeing of the individual.

Community services include social and recreational groups for people who are over 65 or who have a disability. These services receive funding from the Commonwealth Home Support Programme, Home and Community Care Program for Younger People and National Disability Insurance Scheme. Transport may be available, if required.

How can I access this program?

For information on any of mecwacare’s Support Groups, please contact each centre directly. You can also email intake@mecwacare.org.au.

We welcome referrals from individuals, families, health professionals and regional services.

Please direct referrals to Support Groups as follows:

  • Over 65 years through the My Aged Care portal by phoning 1800 200 422, then ask to be referred to the Support Group services at mecwacare at any of our centres. If you are already registered with My Aged Care, then just call My Aged Care and request the Support Group service you want.
  • Under 65 years, living with a disability and not receiving NDIS funding, please contact our Intake Team on 8573 4980 or via email intake@mecwacare.org.au
  • For clients receiving Home Care Package funding, direct referrals to community@mecwacare.org.au.
Who can attend Support Groups?

People over 65 living within the community and people of any age with a disability.

How do I register to attend?

First, you need to call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 and register. Then you can ask to be referred to the Support Group services at mecwacare at any of our centres.

What activities do the programs provide?

Support Groups provide an opportunity to try new things, catch up with old friends and meet new people. Each program is organised by experienced staff and dedicated volunteers who lead a range of programs to meet your needs. Activities include word games and puzzles, arts and crafts, gardening, theme days, bingo, carpet bowls, singing and dancing, light exercises, movies and guest speakers.

There are numerous benefits to attending a support group, including independence, community access, better physical and emotional health, and respite for carers.

Is transport provided?

Transport can be provided to and from our Support Groups. mecwacare has wheelchair-accessible buses that are used to pick up clients within the town boundaries. Unfortunately, we are unable to pick up clients who live out of town, however clients are welcome to make their own way to our centres.

How much does it cost?

You will be asked to pay a small fee towards your services depending on your financial situation. This will be in accordance with government and funding requirements.

Our social and recreational groups bring together vibrant communities of people over 65 or with disabilities to share interests, make friends, and explore new hobbies. With funding from the Commonwealth Home Support Programme, Home and Community Care Program for Younger People, and National Disability Insurance Scheme, we’re able to empower you to live life on your own terms, while staying connected to the people and communities you cherish most.
