mecwacare joins Giving Tuesday to “Seal the Deal” for residents living with dementia

Mon 18, Nov 2019

mecwacare a not-for-profit aged care and disability services provider, will be taking part in Giving Tuesday to raise funds for PARO therapeutic seals in our residential aged care centres.

mecwacare's goal is to raise $40,000 to buy five PARO seals and provide more residents with access to the benefits of this technology. Giving Tuesday is on Tuesday, December 3.

PARO helps relieve depression and anxiety for residents who are living with dementia or mental health issues. PARO responds to sounds and can learn names, including its own, and the built-in intelligence provides psychological and physiological benefits through physical interaction. PARO can learn to behave in a way that the user prefers. By interacting with people, PARO responds as if it is alive, moving its head and legs, making sounds and reflecting behaviour.

PARO is proven to reduce stress and anxiety in older people, stimulate interaction between residents and caregivers, improve relaxation and motivation, and encourage socialisation

mecwacare currently has two PARO seals to share across 11 aged care centres. The benefits are clear, with social interaction and calming distressed residents two of the most effective. PARO also holds the Guinness World Record title of World’s Most Therapeutic Robot.

Giving Tuesday is a global giving movement that has been built by individuals and communities around the world. It is a day to give back to organisations making a difference. You can help us spread the word by sharing the campaign across social media using this link:

Donors will receive tags on our social media accounts and the chance to see the impact their donation has on people living with dementia and mental health issues in their community.

Together, we can make a difference.
